LAMU YOUTH PROJECT
In 2010, Kapkiyai embarked on a transformative journey with the support of the Coffee Initiative. They prioritized gender equality in the coffee industry, providing training to women in agronomy and cooperative management. Recognizing the crucial roles women played in coffee farming, Chairman David Saina championed their inclusion in sales and decision-making. Kapkiyai's special meeting resulted in the Kapkiyai Women in Coffee Resolution, granting women full membership rights.
Today, 106 out of 398 members are women, significantly contributing to the cooperative's success. Women's leadership emerged, with Dorcas Jeptanui leading the Women in Coffee group and participating in management. Their Fairtrade certified women-only coffee initiative showcased their dedication. Training improved coffee productivity and quality, raising yields and premium grades from 25% to over 70%.
Women have truly risen in Kapkiyai.
