FAQ

Our Coffee

How is the coffee roasted? Our coffee ranges from light to medium roasted. Any coffee with a purple label will be closer to a medium roast, while the pink labels will be roasted lighter.

How long will my coffee last past its roast date? We recommend drinking your coffee within 3 months of its roast date. If your coffee is pre-ground it won’t stay fresh as long as it’s wholebean counterpart, and we’d recommend consuming it within 2-3 weeks.

What is the best way of storing coffee? Coffee is best to keep sealed in a cool dark place away from direct sunlight. Refrain from refrigerating coffee, this will add moisture to your beans affecting its flavour.

If you are looking for an airtight container to keep your coffee fresh once it’s open check out our Old Spike coffee tins.

Can you grind the coffee for us? All of our coffees are available whole bean or ground for a variety of brew methods.

If you’re an avid coffee drinker we do recommend grinding at home for each brew. This improves freshness and overall quality of the cup. Need a grinder, pick one up here

How do I know what grind size to buy? Our grind sizes are based on what we find best for at home brew methods. If you have a commercial machine at home add a note to your order and we can grind it finer for you.

If you feel the grind size isn’t right for you, let us now at hello@oldspikeroastery.com.

Sourcing

We are a specialty roaster so all of our coffees are of the arabica variety and score above 80/100 by the SCA. If you want to find out more about this have a look at our blog.

Is your coffee ethically sourced? Yes! We work with farmers to ensure we are buying from farms with ethical and sustainable practices and we make sure we pay these farmers well, at least double the global fairtrade price.

Why is your coffee not certified as Fairtrade? This is because Fairtrade bears no impact on quality and with coffee the higher the quality the higher the price. Our farmers also do not have to pay the expenses attached to Fairtrade certification that often cuts into the wages of farmers’ employees. We’d rather 100% of the money we pay for our beans goes directly to the farmer and his employees.

Why is your coffee not organic? We believe the cost associated with certifying coffee organic is better used to pay the farmers and their employees more money. As we have full traceability on the coffee we source we know sustainable practices are in place.

Wholesale

Do you guys do wholesale? We sure do! We work with some fantastic coffee shops, restaurants, retail sites, offices and co-working spaces making sure their customers are always well caffeinated, and we’re always looking for more like minded businesses to partner with. If social impact, sustainability and seriously tasty coffee are your key drivers we’d love to hear from you! wholesale@oldspikeroastery.com.

Shipping

Where do you ship to? We ship exclusively inside the UK. Coffee is already shipped from around the world, we believe adding to this carbon footprint by shipping abroad is an unnecessary environmental expense! If you’re from outside the UK have a look at some amazing specialty roasters near you.

How long will it take for my coffee to arrive? Any order placed before 10am Monday - Friday will be shipped that day (this is not including subscriptions). The shipment time will depend on what delivery option you select at the checkout.

What should I do if my order is taking longer than expected? Please contact hello@oldspikeroastery.com, we’ll be happy to help.

Return Policy

Any equipment or merchandise can be returned within 28 days of purchase at the cost of the customer, so long it’s unused/unworn.

Email hello@oldspikeroastery.com and we will happily assist you with this.

Unfortunately, as coffee is a perishable good, we do not accept returns for these items. Be assured we cup each coffee going out to ensure quality. If you have any issues with your order or have received the wrong item please email hello@oldspikeroastery.com within 28 days and we will happily help out.

Social Responsibility

How does purchasing a coffee help the homeless? Old Spike relies on traded income to deliver against our social impact objectives. This means whether you are purchasing from us online, at one of our cafes or as a wholesale customer - you are directly contributing to the training and employment of our homeless trainees. In short, the more coffee we sell the more good we can do so every purchase really makes a difference.

Where does the profit get invested? Like any business, we need to make sure our model is sustainable in order for us to deliver against our impact objectives. The decision on where to reinvest the profit will be broadly based on whether a) it contributes towards training and development of our trainees and b) providing more employment opportunities (e.g the opening of a new cafe). Business growth = greater impact so we look to all areas of our operation to maximise the impact we can have.

Are you environmentally sustainable as a business? Making sure our social impact is matched by our efforts towards being environmentally sustainable is hugely important for us as a business. We are Carbon Neutral and all packaging used across the business is either recyclable or compostable. We partnered with Eden Reforestation Projects to plant a tree for every bag of coffee we sell. As of February 1st 2021 we’ve planted 13,501 trees

Where does your barista training take place? We operate our training academy out of our roastery site in Loughborough Junction. It is a state of the art facility, open both to our trainees and the general public where you can learn everything there is to know about becoming a barista.
