Over 10 years of coffee that works harder

2015 · Peckham

It all started in Peckham...

In 2015, two childhood friends opened a small café in Peckham. The idea was simple: roast and serce exceptional speciality coffee while creating real paths to employment for people experiencing homelessness.

Today, we roast in South London, run 7 cafés across the city and supply wholesale partners around the country. As the business grows, so does our Employment Programme. That means more training, more paid placements and more paths into secure, lasting work.

Where the name comes from

“Old Spike”

A “spike” was slang for a workhouse, or more specifically its casual ward. These wards offered short-term accommodation to people with nowhere else to stay.

Our first café opened in Peckham, close to one of London’s largest workhouses. People staying there could be made to earn their keep through hard labour, including breaking rocks for paving over a metal spike. George Orwell captured the harsh reality of these places in his 1931 essay, The Spike.

We chose the name because we wanted Old Spike to offer something different: training, paid work and a second chance to build a lasting career.

ROASTED IN LONDON SINCE 2015

Our Coffee

We choose our coffees for quality, seasonality and flavour. Every bean is responsibly sourced, then roasted in London to bring out the best in each batch.

Quality should reward everyone involved. We work with producers and trusted partners who care about exceptional coffee, paying prices that reflect the skill and effort behind it.
