Social Impact

As a social enterprise, our primary mission is to help reduce homelessness in the UK through training and employment within speciality coffee.

65% of the profits we generate are reinvested into our barista training programme.

Whether that's assisting our head roaster at our roastery or working in one of our cafes as a barista, we're committed to supporting our trainees from training to employment.

Sustainability

We've made a commitment to plant a tree for every 1kg bag of coffee that we sell, through our partnership with the Eden Reforestation Project.

Whether you are a wholesale customer or simply buying a bag online, you can now enjoy your coffee knowing not only is it responsibly sourced, it is also helping the planet.

Sourcing Quality Coffee

We ensure the coffees we serve are as fresh and seasonal as possible to showcase the wonderful diversity of flavours and aromas found in different coffees around the world.

We also have a strong focus on quality. Higher quality means a better price for the farmer, so it is very important that we continue to work with the producers that consistently supply us with high scoring coffees. This helps them secure a higher price which is often 4 - 5 times higher than the Fairtrade minimum.

MOOLEH MANAY - EXCELSA

Why are we presenting this coffee?

It is well known that climate change represents a huge challenge in the agriculture practices. During the last 4 years we have seen how the production of coffee has been affected by frost or droughts and unfortunately nothing ensures that this doesn’t become a constant in the coffee production regardless of the country of origin.

There are hundreds of species, the most common are Arabica and Robusta. Unfortunately climate change poses a significant threat particularly to Arabica coffee production, with projections indicating a potential 80% reduction by 2050. Some studies predict that by the same year, up to 50% of current coffee-growing land could become unsuitable for Arabica cultivation.

The solution could be to create artificially new varieties of arabica more resilient to climate change or to explore the potential in other species like Excelsa. The first option is expensive and doesn’t offer a guarantee of success. Here, in Old Spike, we want to show to the consumers that a solution is available thanks to the work of visionary producers.

What is Excelsa?

There are over 125 species of coffee but only Arabica and Robusta are produced commercially. Excelsa is one of these species, known for its resilience to varying weather conditions, including higher temperatures, different altitudes, and irregular rainfall patterns, making it a potentially valuable crop in the face of climate change.

  • In terms of quality, Excelsa beans offer a unique flavor profile, often described as fruity, full-bodied, and with a distinct, slightly tart taste.
