Better coffee at origin.
We believe exceptional coffee begins with the people who grow it. Our coffees change throughout the year as harvests come and go - chosen for quality, character and provenance.
We buy for quality
Every coffee starts on the cupping table. We select for sweetness, balance, clarity and character, following harvests around the world to find coffees when they're tasting at their best.
Our single origins change with the seasons. Our house coffees stay familiar, while the coffees within them may change throughout the year.
Quality should be rewarded
Exceptional coffee takes skill, time and investment to produce. We select coffees for their quality and pay prices that recognise the work behind them, rather than simply following the commodity market. When quality improves, the people responsible for producing it should share in the value it creates.
What we paid, against the market
How we calculate this
£7.98/kg is our volume-weighted average FOB price, calculated across all the green coffee we buy.
For comparison, we use the Fairtrade Minimum Price for conventional washed Arabica of $2.00/lb (approximately $4.41/kg), effective from December 2026.
We use FOB prices for both figures so we’re comparing coffee at the same point in the supply chain, before freight and UK costs are added.
Fairtrade’s minimum is a safety-net floor and isn’t necessarily the final price paid for Fairtrade coffee.

Relationships matter
Sometimes we work directly with producers. Other times we work with specialist importers and exporters who have spent years building relationships at origin.
We’re less interested in labels than knowing who produced our coffee, how it was produced and how value moves through the supply chain.
When we find exceptional coffee and good people to work with, we want to come back.

Our responsibility doesn’t end at origin.
Old Spike was founded in Peckham in 2015 to roast exceptional coffee while creating meaningful routes into employment for people experiencing homelessness.
Today, the coffee we buy supports producers and partners around the world. The coffee we sell helps fund training, paid work and routes into employment here in the UK.
From the people who grow it to the people whose careers can begin with it, we want every cup to create more value.
